CGI Spaceships

On the strength of the work they were doing for the Enhanced CDs for the "Within the Rock" score, 360 entertainment asked Corbitt Design for two spaceships to add to the film, the cargo ship you see on the left and the escape shuttle pictured below. On short notice, Corbitt Design pulled together two shots for the movie totaling only six seconds, but adding immeasurably to the look and feel of the film. The 3-D spaceships for Within the Rock were created by Dan Dipierro (3-D Designer, Modeler, and Animator) and Pat Corbitt (Executive Producer) of Corbitt Design.

Pat and Dan, who have worked together for ten years, feel their personal bond gives a real life to their work. "Often we know intuitively what needs to be done and what looks best," says Corbitt. "Dan's fanatacism for detail and authenticity is what I think sets our 3-D apart from the rest. For example, in these models he 'distressed' the metal and put in a lot of small features that were a pain to model and seem insignificant when placed one by one on the main model. But, when you view them as a whole, they are the difference between a realistic model and a fake-looking one."

"Lighting is especially challenging for many animations," says Dan. "This model has a bunch of different light sources, light types, gels, glows, etc. When we start to move the model, the lighting really comes into play. When I watch animations, I often watch the lighting--it can be what makes you think what you are seeing isn't synthetic, but real."
