The Filmmakers: Gary Tunnicliffe

GARY TUNNICLIFFE (Director/Screenwriter) makes his directorial debut in "Within the Rock," but in a sense, he has been preparing for this film all his life. As a child growing up in England, he remembers Friday nights when his mother worked late and he got to stay up and watch horror films on television. "I must have seen every Hammer film ever made," he remembers wistfully. "I remember the morning after I had seen 'Taste The Blood of Dracula,' my mother came into my room and asked if I had any bad dreams. I assured her I hadn't. Then she opened the curtains and found that I had tied all the windows shut the night before to prevent entry by vampires."

Tunnicliffe spent virtually his entire adolescence watching horror films and although he first wanted to be an actor, eventually he was drawn to creating monsters of his own. he made his first sci-fi/horror film in 8 mm at the age of 12 ("Revenge of the Haggis"). Since then, Tunnicliffe has created special effects for films such as Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" (and its infamous Pinhead) and "Candyman."

In "Within the Rock," Tunnicliffe had his first opportunity to create a whole world, not just a creature or two. That enabled him to create a new kind of creature, one based on fact and believability. "I really wanted to present this creature with a history," Tunnicliffe says, "so that you could look at it and think 'Yeah, this could be a real animal.'"

Tunnicliffe co-directed "Megalodon" for 100% Entertainment and Corbitt Digital Films, L.L.C. "Megalodon" is the story of an oil exploration submersible that encounters the direct ancestor of the great white shark, supposedly extinct for fifty million years.

Tunnicliffe's special effects wizardry has touched "Sleepy Hollow," "Blade," and "Mission: Impossible 2."
